Multidisciplinary colloquium on “The careers of a Prince. Lives and lands of Albert I of Monaco (1848–1922)”.

Led with rigour and talent by Xavier Maudit and Olivier Lascar, it offered an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the Prince’s work and era, thanks to the detailed and documented study carried out by the various attendees who gave a wide range of presentations, based on research in different documentary collections. On the Saturday evening, Charles Berling brought some literary flair to the proceedings with a close and very sensitive reading of “The Career of a Navigator”, a book written by the Prince himself. The reading emphasised the rich poetry of this evocative text.

 

The opening of the colloquium and the introductory speeches on Saturday morning, as well as the concluding presentations, featuring Stéphane Bern and Jean-Paul Pellegrinetti, were highlights of the event, attended by H.S.H. Prince Albert II.

 

We would like to thank the President of the Institute of Oceanography, the Director of the Oceanographic Museum and the entire Museum team for their warm welcome in this beautiful conference room, the perfect setting in which to honour the memory of Prince Albert I. We would also like to thank the public, so many of whom came to spend the weekend listening to the various presentations.
